SUMMARY:Art and the Holocaust Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Institute for Holocaust Education invites middle school art teachers and their students to participate in an annual Holocaust-related project. \nIn order to build knowledge of the Holocaust participating teachers will teach a Holocaust lesson provided by the IHE to their students during at least one full class period before commencing with the visual art portion of the project. \nSuggested projects are literature-inspired murals\, an artifact collage\, a charcoal portrait of a victim of the Holocaust or of someone who has a shared life experience. Upon completion\, students prepare a written reflection on the project. The IHE provides curriculum resources for each project and a stipend to be used for art supplies. \nEach year the project culminates in an exhibit of student artwork in the Eisenberg Art Gallery at the Jewish Community Center along with a reception for the artists\, their parents\, and their teachers. \nPROJECT OBJECTIVES\n1. To become familiar with individual people and cultural history in the Holocaust.\n2. To use art as a method to learn about the Holocaust.\n3. To understand and apply portraiture and experience media while learning about individuals of the Holocaust.\n4. To understand visual arts in relation to history and other disciplines and to relate that knowledge to the student’s current life.\n5. To reflect upon the effectiveness of the project. \nFor more information about the project\, please contact us:  info@ihene.org

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Women in Auschwitz \nAugust 27 at 7:00 PM \nWeisman Room at the Staenberg JCC \nIn this talk\, Cushman will discuss women’s existence in the most notorious Nazi camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau. Three groups of women lived and worked in the camp. Women prisoners\, including Jews\, Romani women\, political prisoners\, and others\, suffered and tried to survived in deadly conditions of starvation and forced labor. Some few found advantages in “privileged” work or as prisoner functionaries. These women often had some degree of power\, which they used sometimes to help and sometimes to harm. Other women served the SS in Auschwitz as guards\, communications experts\, and nurses. Others accompanied their husbands to the camp as helpmeets in the racial domination of Europe. We will explore these groups individually and in interaction with each other.

SUMMARY:Week of Understanding at the Durham
DESCRIPTION:For 50 years\, Abe Piasek carried in silence the unfathomed weight of surviving Nazi labor and death camps. In time\, he knew he needed to share his experience\, doing so at schools\, churches\, community centers and military bases. Before his passing in 2020\, Abe asked his friend Steve Goldberg\, an educator\, to keep telling his story — a story of a 13-year-old boy being taken away from his family and never seeing his parents or little sister again.\n\n\nAbe’s legacy continues on March 25 at The Durham Museum\, as part of the Institute for Holocaust Education lecture series. We are honored to welcome Steve Goldberg\, who will share with our audience Abe’s story of pain\, courage and healing.\n\n\nTo Register: DurhamMuseum.org/holocaust-education
