The Holocaust - the murder of more than six million European Jews, one and one-half million of whom were children, and more than five million others-is a tragic legacy bequeathed to all post-Holocaust humanity. All the hallowed ideas and institutions of Western civilization have had to be re-evaluated as a result of the Holocaust. “After Auschwitz”, one scholar wrote, “anything is possible”. Elie Wiesel, noted survivor, author and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, has observed that no assumptions can remain the same after Auschwitz. He believes that the Holocaust is not simply another subject, but is the subject for all civilizations to examine.
